Discovery Thinking - Integrating Geology and Geophysics: Lessons from Giant Global Discoveries

Wednesday, 30 August

1:20pm–5:20pm

George R. Brown Convention Center, Room 360A

The 2023 "Discovery Thinking" Forum will be the twenty-eighth presentation of the AAPG Discovery Thinking initiative. This year we joined with SEG to emphasize exemplary case studies. Explorers need to integrate geology and geophysics to find and develop significant discoveries. Building on our fifteen-year tradition of 100+ discoveries, this Discovery Thinking Forum will feature four extraordinary discovery presentations.

Speakers and their colleagues overcame significant business, technical, and professional challenges. Speakers will explore the philosophy of exploration, stories from remarkable careers, professional insights, colorful anecdotes, and lessons learned on the path to success. As technology advances and younger geoscientists enter our profession, the organizers see success stories such as these as valuable
training analog case studies. These forums allow explorers to discuss the personal side of success, sometimes called the "art of exploration." The audience is always fortunate to hear the speakers share abundant, well-illustrated technical data and insights from costly and hard-won experiences.

IMAGE offers numerous specialized technical sessions. However, "Discovery Thinking" forums fill an essential gap in how technical and professional skills combine to turn prospects into discoveries. The organizers encourage speakers to share personal stories about discoveries they know well, bring forward appropriate technical data, and address the audience's questions. We build on our heritage with each Discovery-Thinking program. Explorers can find a treasure trove of previous presentations posted on the AAPG Search and Discovery website under the Special Collections tab. IMAGE 2023 is pleased to present "Integrating Geology and Geophysics: Lessons from Giant Global Discoveries." We celebrate the science and professionalism that bring about discoveries and the prosperity they bring. The organizers thank the presenters for stimulating Discovery Thinking in all of us!
